The task of reconciling the 'Picture This!' database and file system is nearly complete! It may take a while longer to get the entire photo library and the accompanying captions humming.
Volume Album Event Rivers Ammonoosuc River (NH) April 2007
It was drizzling and damp the entire day, but once you suit up in your drytop or drysuit who gives a hoot. Temps were in the 50's, winds were calm, and the level was a perfect medium 4.1 feet (~850 cfs). The level here 5 days prior, as you can see onshore behind Rich, was nearly 6 feet, which triples the flow and requires advanced paddling skills to negotiate.
Happy to be in his kayak for the first time this season.
...slicing through a wave in his old-school Mad River ME.
A rare action shot, in mid-current and heading downstream. The Ammo is lovely. It's sort of a cross between an oversized Lower New Haven and an undersized Dead River.
A clean line through to the end of Boatbreaker Rapid, above Pierce Bridge. It's entrance is marked by a rocky island, where the water goes mostly right.
The rapids below the Powerhouse Dam (and lunch stop) are fairly continuous and exciting, for a mile if not more.
...clearly in control.
At 4 feet, the Ammo is for the most part a class II river with class III consequences. I still vividly recall my first Ammo run, circa 1986, in a tandem canoe, which ended in a shivering walk down the railroad tracks back to the waiting car, after capsizing one too many times.
There were a many jet ferry and surfing spots en route to the take-out, but none more foregiving than the one shown here.
Dirt roads follow the river for much of its distance, making it possible to spot cars and/or take-out at any number of locations.
Testing indeed
