The task of reconciling the 'Picture This!' database and file system is nearly complete! It may take a while longer to get the entire photo library and the accompanying captions humming.
Volume Album Event Rivers Ausable Chasm - NY Ausable Chasm
View from the Rt. 9 bridge: Rainbow Falls
Chuck from NEA (a Buffalo NY environmental consulting firm) lead the pre-trip briefing and post-trip de-briefing. He had surveys for us to fill out before and after the trip as well, all in the interest of making sure that the FERC/NYSEG dam relicensing agreement is "paddler friendly".
Rainbow Falls (put-in). We understand the FERC is going to mandate that NYSEG open their gates to recreational paddlers on selected summer dates, as part of their re-liscensing agreement.
View from the Rt. 9 bridge: The entrance to Horseshoe Rapid at 300 CFS
The crease at the Horseshoe looked pretty turbulent, and I think most everyone went a bit to the right of it.
Marcus, scraping down the first drop (Horseshoe) on river right. This one is right below the Rt. 9 bridge. It can be scouted from either side, but at 300 CFS the left is best for picture taking!
I like this picture of Si and Cheryl coming down the Horseshoe...
Cherly filed a trip report on the VPC website, claiming to have accomplished the first (female) kayak descent into the Chasm.
All the action is on the right at Devil's Oven at 300 CFS. We estimated a total drop of 12 feet, with a short but technical rapid (III) immediately below. I lost a thighstrap anchor so failed to roll up, and needed a throwbag tow to shore (thank you, Marcus!).
The is Mike (Duggan's) Hole. It features 2 steel beams in the water for added excitement, as is virtually impossible to portage. It was just a III at 300 CFS, but you need to remember to drive/boof left at the bottom...or risk being pinned against the undercut ledge on river right (like I was).
This is the narrowest part of the gorge, below Table Rock and the ACC tubing/rafting put-in.
